You have experienced many worlds. Surely, we all recognize that there are worlds within worlds. Visions, dreams, numinous encounters in nature, synchronicities, moments of experiencing the profound sanctity of life: each reflects the possibility of encountering the world behind our daily reality. This week at the Station in the forest by the sea we will explore portals to upper world and underworld states of consciousness. Through meditations, work with dreams and deep imagination, art practices and wanders with the wild other-than-humans, we will experiment with finding and moving through portals between the worlds. Might we become accomplished at resting in the ground of being, the spirit realm where all is One? And perhaps this will support us in diving deep into the mythic realm of the animate world, where each creature knows its own name and its place in the tapestry of life. When we become very still and at the same time deeply engaged with the wild world, it may be that we will discover some clue to our true nature, as poet David Whyte says, the truth at the center of the image you were born with.
This week our small group will meet daily with our guide, Sage Magdalene, via internet. She will provide invitations for experiencing and exploring places where the veils are thin, portals where we might enter into other worlds, different realities, alternate states of being. As the nights grow longer, as we move toward the deeper dark and cold of winter, there are opportunities for deep reflection and conversations between the Self and the Holy Others.
What the Old One is Thinking
Einstein unfurled formulas
into the night -- strung them
like prayer flags, humble offerings,
a mysterious conversation with eloquent
questions in a language few comprehend.
"I want to know," he once said,
"what the old one is thinking."
One night when the spangled heavens
undulated and seemed to drop
nearly close enough to touch stars,
I felt a sensing presence --
not an animal, not a bird --
something unseen, perhaps unseeable,
curious, welcoming, reaching
toward me, as if bearing an invitation
from the imponderable beginning
of all things.
I was not afraid in that great
darkness. I see you, I almost said
even though I saw nothing
but the yo-yoing stars, the silhouettes
of trees, the curve of land falling
toward the ocean.
And yet, I was enveloped in some
thing strangely familiar, as if there all
my life, unnoticed, and now delighted
by my attention, by my reciprocal pleasure --
like speckled birds we one day notice nesting
in a meadow we have cut a thousand
Yes, I said, not knowing to whom -- everything
hinged on that outbreath -- and I began
a halting conversation in a language
I don't know how to speak, began
a clumsy dance, not knowing who
twirls me, lets go and vanishes, spins
off faraway, who returns sometimes,
always laughing -- and I laugh too,
as if I've heard the joke
told when the universe howled
itself into being.
I do not have Einstein's starry
mind, probing mathematics and chemistry
to apprehend the old one's patterned language.
This morning, I have only glyphs: these
bison, osprey, dancing sandhill cranes,
plump cottonwood buds, this
granite heaved from the deep Earth, this
river racing with snowmelt, this
land greening beneath rain. This. This.

Sage Magdalene: Sage is an artist creating experiences that promote radical shifts of consciousness leading to generous, generative, Earth-loving practices of ecological reciprocity. She designs collaborative international gatherings, performances and demonstrations that encourage cross-species communication and initiate quantum shifts in humanity's capacity to respond creatively and compassionately to current planetary crisis situations.
Sage is a guide and trainer for Animas Valley Institute, an organization dedicated to supporting the underworld journey to soul initiation for present and future generations. She has a gift for hearing and reflecting the deep stories of many beings. She invites people to thresholds and opens gates between worlds. She has been an educator, artist, dancer, and gate keeper in many ecosystems. Her greatest joy is to hear and converse with the wild others: moon, spider, frog, human, river and stars. She brings a light touch and embodied wisdom to the serious work of transformation. Sage lives in the Pojoaque River Valley, northern New Mexico, USA.
